That's really cool! I am still looking for the real thing though...

You could probably have one made by a jeweler, but it would likely cost a fortune to do.

Earn a fortune and live your dream. :D

Don't ever let anyone convince you your earthly dreams are out of reach either. Every great accomplishment started out as someone's dream. (Sorry that's a bit corny I know >.>)

We are both pretty good earners, but we are saving most of our income so we can afford to have children one day. I'm not really bothered that the wife keeps me on a short leash when it comes to money. ^^

Step 1: find a watchmaker and seduce her.
Step 2: get her hooked on Noir.
Step 3: tell her you want to cosplay together

There was a Chinese website where custom pocketwatches could be ordered cheaply, and they used the bootleg Noir pocketwatch as an example. But you had to order in quantity of 100 pieces or so. Someone posted it on the old forum, so unfortunately I didn't save the link.

There are watches that look similar:
Spoiler: show

So you could conceivably have a watchmaker put a custom face and hands on one, and have a jeweler make a sculpted lid. But it still wouldn't play music...

Or: become a watchmaker.

Today while shopping I stumbled upon a wall clock with a separate seconds hand. Its shape seems even better suited to transform into a "Kirika's pocketwatch" than my previous attempt. It has a domed glass too, which is nicer, and it was only 11€!

(picture from here)

The downside is that it's made of plastic, but seeing how I won't have to drill holes in the face to mount a second mechanism, that may not be a problem. The "seconds" hand is at 6 o'clock, but that's easily fixed by hanging it from 10:30 instead of 12 (and re-setting the hands accordingly).

I couldn't resist buying one, just to know how they did it - it's constructed almost exactly the same as my clock; two separate clock mechanisms (it also needs 2 batteries), a spacer for the second one, etc.

Initial measurements suggest that I could just print out my dial picture again and it should fit...

Soon, a Noir-themed clock in every room...  ;D

My impressions of the abovementioned wall clock:

- A domed glass looks nice, but it interferes with a clocks' hands, when they are as oversized as Kirika's pocketwatch's.

- The body is constructed out of plastic, which won't stand being re-assembled more than a few times.

- Requiring a separate battery for the seconds removes half of the functionality of the seconds hand on a wall clock...

For various reasons (not wanting to do the same thing twice, having a pair of Hermle serpentine clock hands,...) I decided to base this on the "official" merchandise pocketwatch:

Spoiler: show

(thread necro)

(Continued from this post)

Yep, had a look online. Even the smallest music box I ever saw was too big to fit in a pocket watch, hence my scepticism.

Reuge in Switzerland specialise in music boxes, and among their products is a series of pocketwatches that have miniature music boxes.

The music box in the Reuge watches runs on a different mechanism to the watch itself, and would have to be wound with a key or a separate knob; the in-show watch has a small knob at the 11:00 position, which would ostensibly be used to wind the music box, with the crown at 12:00 used to wind the watch.

A demonstration of a working Reuge watch:

Here's one that's even more amazing, and it looks like it might have a winding knob at the 11 o'clock position:

I remember seeing that one - I didn't link to it because it wasn't representative of the Noir watch. That one's music box and automaton are wound by a key inserted into the back, though. The 11:00 dial is actually used to set the alarm, which activates the automaton.

I was collecting data for potential use on a 3D model of Kirika's pocket watch, when I realized the watch makes no sense.

The watch is a so-called "hunter case" as opposed to "open-face" watch. Open face watches have the stem had 12 o'clock, but traditional hunter-face watches have the stem at 3 o'clock. Only modern hunter-case watches sometimes have the stem at 12 o'clock.

The seconds dial is always at 6 o'clock on a traditional watch, except when a hunter-case movement is installed in an open-face watch, in which case the seconds dial can be at 3 o'clock. Or, as in the case of the "official" merchandise noir pocket-watch, a traditional hunter case with the dial rotated so 12 o'clock is at the stem and the seconds hand is also at 3 o'clock. I've found nothing about watches with the seconds hand at 7:30.

Note that the stem has no crown. This suggests that the watch is key-wound and key-set (making it very unlikely to be a modern watch). However, the little thingie at 11 o'clock is a set pin. It's a little button that must be depressed with a fingernail in order to set the watch, its purpose to prevent accidentally changing the time. It's a feature that only makes sense on a stem-set watch, but Kirika's watch has no crown on the stem by which to set the time.

And we never see a winding key. It should be on a watch chain to prevent separation from the watch.

It could be battery-powered and radio-controlled, of course. But then why the set pin? It seems they didn't put as much thought into the pocket watch as perhaps they should have...
