FYI, servers were upgraded to a new PHP version.  Shouldn't have any issues but if you see any weirdness (more than usual) let me know.

Not sure if y'all have seen or discussed this, but based on the whole creativity discussion in that last transcript... if you haven't watched Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! -- go watch it right now!  Now! Go!

I've got a few 48hr passes if anyone wants one:
A3CCXNDB9NK  (Expires on the 20th so grab it now!)
HY989REJT3D
MZR5N49GWTX

I haven't felt so giddy watching a show in a while now.  This sequence hooked me and gave me chills: https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/109131

Then it just keeps getting better.

I... I adore Shirobako.... and I was recently thinking of rewatching it.

I might pop in now and then.

Anything we should be concerned about?  Should we change our passwords and other personal details?

Probably not, but it wouldn't hurt.  It might have been the remnants of the broken wiki or the test version that I had hanging around.  I also found a few spammy accounts in the list that, while not active, really needed to get scrubbed. There were a lot of attempted signups a few weeks back while I was on vacation, which may be when the "attack" happened.

So if anyone was legit signed up but lurking and I blew away your account, send email to soldats at this domain.

Also, I'm casting a wary eye at the gallery.  It's "up to date" but it's an old platform.  Also, I turned up the scrutiny on the "attachments" here (which includes avatars).  If it denies an upload, then that's why.

Admin should totally be renamed Altena. :D

I think somebody grabbed that name already :)

What do you mean by later-stage Bee Train? Are you talking about from 2008 onwards?  ::)

Don't really have a date in mind, but there was a point where Bee Train really wasn't really doing "interesting" things as much as when I had gotten hooked.  Normally stuff based on existing source material (even though there's notorious conflicts about how they strayed from those sources too much).  Stuff was "okay"... but if I wasn't in to the material, there wasn't much else for me to latch on to.  *shrug*

nope..nopety..nope
Yeah.  That.  If it keeps that shit up, I'm out too.

FYI Upgrade at the host provider today (Thursday Oct 25), with possible outage up to 2 hours.  Should come back to normal after that, but I'll check on it in the morning.

I do drift through occasionally :)  I do rather miss talking about current shows.

For Magus Bride, the OVAs were pretty much a prequel, framed as flashbacks from what I assume is a little bit further in the future of the current series (but not really spoilery, after all they released them first).  Has some nifty moments including bits of magic and "horror" (not splattergore, but not entirely shy about it either).  Anyway, quality production with some extra context and background.  Since I've got Crunchyroll they were right there months ago so it was no effort for me to obtain :)

Speaking of splattergore, I'm not sure I'm going to continue Inuyashiki if it keeps the grimdark violence at this level without some sort of counterweight.  Considering the creative team, I'm not confident.

I had a notion come to me when watching the new Kino... it's like if the later-stage (aka boring) Bee Train did those stories instead of the classic all those years ago.  Yeah I know, a heck of a thing to say here, but there it is.  And now you won't be able to un-see it ;D

Somehow, I ended up checking out 7 series..yes 7..  from this fall season despite being pretty meh on each Anime season the past few years. So what the hell, I might as well write my impressions and I'd love to hear other peoples opinions if they have any for this new season.

...and once again you seem to have picked exactly what I did, with the exception of Whales, since I'm going to wait for when it drops on Netflix.  But I'm certainly looking forward to that one.

Blood Blockade and Magus' Bride are on the top of my list for this season, for sure.  I was totally swept up with BBB's first season's absurd attention to detail and am hoping the madness carries through.  I checked out the OVAs for Bride to see if was going to be worthwhile and it hooked me a bit, so I'm hopeful there as well.

Girl's Last Tour will by my "Sunday Breakfast" show and hits many of the atmospheric ingredients I like for post-apocalypse world-building in cartoon form.

MMO Junkie and Inuyashiki I'll be giving a change because grownups.  As I also have aspirations for quitting my job to be an "elite NEET" (though at my age, that's called "early retirement"), I was amused by that premise.  And for the other, I'm interested in where the old-man-hero thing goes.  (though he's not *that* old... I mean... that bad at 58? Really?  *cough*)

I'll also be sticking with Kino's Journey for now since I want to hear more stories from that world. Though I'm not a big fan of mediocrity-though-it's-true-to-the-source.  And it's hard not to think of the show as mediocre when compared to the original because for me that was such a notch above in so many ways.  Doesn't help when the second episode is a rushed and generic version of one of the best arcs in the original either (as altered from the source as it was).  I know they needed to re-introduce Prince Dunebuggy for when he (likely) appears later, but still kind of put me off a bit...

I guess to get me through, I'll just exclaim "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiii *ding*" every now and again during a lull. :)

Last season I was all about Made In Abyss -- holey smokes that was amazingly done.  Richly-detailed artwork, excellent character motion (and emotion), and even the orchestrated soundtrack were all top-notch quality.  Looking forward to more of that in the future.  And I got caught up in Re:Creators,  which had some superbly crafted moments interspersed among very long, dense periods of dialog (talking-not-showing gets on my nerves).  The meta-narrative about the creative process and industry was pretty enjoyable though.

Announcements & Introductions / Re: Flashchat

Many many moons after being asked, I set up a quick link to the Chat using the "Redirect Board" feature.  It should only be visible to "Saplings" and "True Fans", which is pretty much anyone who's made at least 1 post I think.

I've only tested that it goes to the (hopefully) correct URL, but as I don't have Flash configured on this box (and I'm too lazy to go find the tablet that does), you'll have to let me know if there's anything wrong there.

Cheers!

ELDA TALUTA / Re: Recommend me an Anime

Had to peek through your MAL real quick (I need to set up one of those...) because I suspected you already saw most everything on my favorites, and I was almost right. :)

Two notables for me: Kyousougigiga is on your planned list, and I really recommend leaping in.  The new bluray is out (just showed up for me!), but it should still be streaming on Crunchyroll.  The recent ANN review is a pretty good description, especially about Rie Matsumoto's attention to rich details.  Which is something I loved about Blood Blockade Battlefront (and carried me through the weak spots).

One of my all time favorites now is Xam'd: Lost Memories (aka Bounen no Xamdou.  It's a great bit of sci-fi world building, excellent (though sometimes economized) character animation, and just a great sense of scale.  Feels a little confusing towards the climax and the end, but it opens up a lot more on subsequent viewings.  Don't know if it's actually streaming anywhere anymore...

Last honorable mention -- since it was on your planned list -- would be Song of the Sky (aka Soronowoto).  Not really a moe fan, but it tips it on it's head in a wonderfully detailed post-apocolyptic world-building bit of "wholesome" fun.  Well, there's a couple of cringy bits as moe is bound to have, but again, I'm a sucker for worldbuilding, especially when it looks good. And there's an underlying sense of decline, punctuated with a set of flashbacks in one episode that really give a lot of chilling clues that provide a counterpoint to the otherwise cheery nature of everybody.  I think Crunchyroll still has it.

Announcements & Introductions / Server Maintenance Wednesday 5PM ET
« on: March 07, 2017, 07:18:47 AM »
Got a note from the Dreamhosters that they're doing SQL server maintenance on Wednesday (the 8th) at 2PM PT (5PM ET), and will probably take 2-3 hours, so the site won't respond during that time.  I'll try to make a point to check on it before I turn in for the evening to see if it's back up or not.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I guess it's not so much hacking that I'm worried about as much as someone on the outside using the googles to dox or out someone, even inadvertently.  All the non-PM pages are available for all to see.  So I'm just hoping everyone uses a little bit of caution and good judgement and remember that we're not as isolated as we feel in here.

Just a reminder that although membership has dwindled, this board does still get crawled on a regular basis by search engines.  Also, while it gets regular security updates, I'm not always aware the forum engine needs one and it could be a bit behind.

While the risk is probably low, this is an unsecured public site, and I'm really uncomfortable with members' real names being casually thrown around here.  Especially names associated with photographs, or full names that can be traced to other personal sharing that's been done on here.  And if someone cracked the password database, and tied a real name to a password, and you tend to use the same or similar passwords... okay, a bit paranoid but there really might be thousands of people with nothing better to do but try to scrape little obscure hobby boards for something they can cash in on.

Anyway, please keep that in mind.  It feels like it's "just us", but the whole world can see us, if they care to look.

Noir / Re: Too Much Noir
« on: October 26, 2016, 07:59:46 AM »
You know you haven't been watching enough Noir after having watched too much Noir when you have an almost-lucid, rambling dream in a live-action Noir-verse...

...though it wasn't like the Starz live-action so much (though a lot of that seeped in), and none of our characters were actually there but it all involved tracking them and the Soldats (who were actually Soviet spies for some reason) so there were photos and such. And I had to sneak in to Chloe's office to try to find out what she was up to...  Very tense!   ??? :o ???

Did you know Chloe had just a normal, albeit tidy, office tucked away in the back of a shopping mall I used to go to a lot as a child, and that she used manilla folders to organize all of her targets and communications with Altena just like a normal office worker?  I was rather gobsmacked by that revelation at the time!    :o

Starz, call me! I have new script ideas for you to reboot the project with!     ;D
