Title: "Le Grande Rewatch"
Post by: Fellini 8.5 on March 19, 2007, 06:43:46 PM
So Section 8's "catching up" with MADLAX has me realizing that it's not only been months since I last watched MADLAX, but it's been at least as many months since I watched Noir! (I was too sick to have a "Noir Year's Eve")

I'm thinkin' I need to catch up before "El Cazador" starts.  Or at least before I get my mitts on the first raw...    ;D

But, with 14 discs, there's only... *looks up* 12 days to get crackin' on that.  If I take some well-needed vacation time, I might be able to marathon them over about 4 or so (my days of all-nighters are near an end, sadly...).

Anyone else feeling the urge to overindulge a little?  Perhaps a mini "virtual" marathon for the last couple of discs of each?  Not necessarily real-time in-synch, what with our far-flung global empire we have here. :)

>raise hand> guilty..... I need to rewatch both.  I know I am forgetting things.....  >>gets out bullet proof vest for protection>  looks over shoulder> no Mireille or Kirika... good nor Madlax or Ludmelda.....

I think I'll explode if I shotgun the last two volumes in one sitting, so I'll decline.

I plead innocent because I've rewatched both Noir and Madlax within the past 2-3 month. ^^

I watch random episodes of Noir and Madlax all the time, but I guess I'm in for a full chronological rewatch, I kinda miss that! Besides, it's not like it gets boring or anything! ^^

Well, I'm afraid I'm gonna face lapidation for what I'm about to say but I actually perceived middle episodes of Noir as boring (e.g. caught myself skipping half an episode just to get to the interesting part) upon the latest rewatch... It must be because of Madlax, that was the first Noir rewatch since I've become a Madlax fan...

I wonder why do you insist so much on your separatist views towards Noir and Madlax... They're not rival shows! They're like siblings! And "El Cazador" too! ^^ Of course, that said, you don't deserve lapidation for it ^^; and you're completely entitled to your opinion, obviously! :)

They are too much alike not to be rivals. :P Have you heard the term "sibling rivalry", by the way? ;) In any case, I can't perceive them as one because they are also quite different, it's not the case we have with .hacks. If two shows are comparable but do not share the same setting and plot premise, they are rivals, and the more comparable, the more bitter the rivalry. :P

I'm in. ...Sort of. I can probably get through all of Noir in this time limit.

Not Madlax, though. I still need volume 7 and more time to marathon that! ^^;

the more comparable, the more bitter the rivalry. :P

Well, I just have in my opinion that "bitter rivalry" shouldn't be encouraged in any way, specially not between two shows made by the same people and whose similarities are completely intentional. Besides, in a Bee-Train Fan forum as it is, I just don't think it's wise, pleasant or constructive to encourage "Noir fans VS Madlax fans" separatism. Just my opinion, of course! :)

My point is, there's no need to create "pro-noir" or "pro-madlax" subgroups I think... ^^; We're all Bee Train fans here! And we're all in the same boat! ^^

I'm currently vrooming through Madlax for the (you heard right) first time -- episode 16 now! I got sucked in at 11 or so, and now I'm honoured to be able to finish such a wonderful series, finally.

Maybe we could rewatch, like, the last 5 eps of each. Or for the brave ones, 13. The halfway point is good.

Actually I started a Le Grande Rewatch in the early hours of the morning, but it's not just Girls With Guns, it's all the Bee Train anime I've seen and bought. I'm two discs into ".hack//SIGN" and then it's onto "Noir", "Madlax", and then "Avenger."

It won't leave much time for sleep, but It's gonna be a fun. ;D

I'm waiting for my Noir DVDs to arrive so I can do my own version of the rewatch, while I catch the odd Madlax episode through The Anime Network.  ;D I plan into joining the rewqatch madness not so much because of the premiere but because I have some plot bunnies bugging me but before putting pen into paper (or is it fingertips to keyboard?) I need to do some research on key episodes on both.

My sixty-two year old father was over and saw some ".hack//SIGN" and some "Noir". He didn't seem to care for "SIGN" - I recall him saying something about "endless dialogue." ;D He liked "Noir" much more and wants to borrow it. He really liked the "SIGN" soundtrack though, more than the one for "Noir", and wants me to get him that, too.

So anyway, if Koichi Mashimo and Yuki Kajiura were wondering, they can appeal to senior citizens.  :D

Ahh! 7 days?! *is not worthy* I haven't even gotten through Madlax the first time yet; I still have two discs to go and they're still in my Netflix queue. *puts them at the top of the queue in a panic*. I guess I'll send my current discs back Monday and watch Noir while waiting for Madlax.

I'd say "Yikes!", but to tell the truth, that was my original idea when I first thought of it.  I was thinking I'd take a week off work and just blast through all of those, and maybe a few episodes Meine Liebe fansubs, .hack//Legend, Popolocrois Story... and then there's the pre-Bee Train Mashimo stuff I have too...  Hmmm.

However, there's no chance I'm able to take a full week off just yet; too much going on. :(  So I'm going to stick to the usual Noir + MADLAX cadence.

However, I've finagled a couple of days off for this coming Friday through Monday -- yes, you've got that right -- I'm going to be Mr. Extended Weekend!  ;)

That's a short span to watch 14 discs, but I think I can do it.

My dilemma at the moment is "what order do I watch them in?"  The nerd in me thinks it should be chronilogical, as it is supposed to lead up to #3.  However, for me, Noir is my favorite and has the most impact, and I'm a "frosting-last" kind of guy.  Still, I've done the MADLAX-then-Noir sequence before, so maybe it wouldn't hurt to flip it around this one time.

Plus, after watching Noir, I usually have a case of "Post-Noir Syndrome", which leaves me restless and irritable for a while. I'd hate to have to go back to work right away after that, and  I think MADLAX is one of the few shows that can overcome it.  Just so long as I don't get a case of "Post-MADLAX Syndrome"...  *cough*

I kind of doubt that the El Cazador raw will actually be available by Monday night, but it's my intention to watch the first torrent that I get my hands on.

Tonight, I might just be able to squeeze in the last disc of Avenger...  Sounds like a good idea to warm up, as it were.  :)

Just watch out so that it doesn't become "Post-Bee Train series syndrome". ;) Otherwise, we'll have to look for a new web-master, host and figurehead at once after El Cazador finishes airing - my gut tells me it's gonna be THAT perilous. ^^

Koveras, for almost a year now, I've been dying to ask you a question...

Have you ever considered the possibility of including something like "Madlax is superior to Noir" in either your custom title or signature? By doing so, you could spare yourself a bit of subsequent effort and, more importantly, ensure that this obnoxious element appears somewhere in every single one of your posts. (Right now, your posts are sort of hit-or-miss in this regard... ::))

The problem with that will be that I won't be able to post new messages that contain only that single thought any more, since with it in the signature the messages will have to be empty. ^^ And I'm determined to have a four-digit number on my posting counter. :P

And it's not like anyone notices my pro-Madlax agenda any longer, usually, it gets ignored, anyway, so I don't think anyone minds me keeping it up. :P

Holy cow, I am getting close to the end of Madlax and I am getting to really love the series (more than I did before, it's not as I disliked it). I notice many small details I had missed before, it's as if something clicked into place... What if I end up rating it higher than Noir? Would that make me a traitor to the Noir cause, I wonder.
I hope I will find the time and the desire to marathon Noir soon too so I can make a new direct comparison between the two.

Well, a number of factors have contributed to a schedule change for me.  The bad news is that I'll probably have no way of finishing one of the series before Monday let alone both.  But the good news is that instead of the Extended Weekend (tm), I get to take all of next week off.

So I'll finish late, and I'll probably watch the raw as soon as it shows up even if I'm in the middle of one of the others, but I'll get to spend some quality time with it all.  :)

Now I've got to stock up on Pinot Noir and pasta!

You'll all absolutely hate me for this, but I haven't rewatched either series in full for at least a year! I'm not really the type to watch series over after I've finished them as I'm watching so many others already, and I have a pretty busy schedule most of the time so I can't get in full on marathons of series and I don't normally like rewatching them any other way. I am planning on watching each of the first episodes of the girls-with-guns series when El-Cazador airs, so I might continue doing that until the end (it would be very fun to compare each episode stylistically!).

I'm procrastinating soo much. :-[ I've watched all of Noir episodes 1, 5, 7, 10, and 11, and parts of 13-16. I was going to watch 17-26, then the last two Maldax discs I got from Netflix, but I chose sleep over Bee Train. :-[

I'm so glad the premeire date is later than I thought. That means I still have tomorrow to marathon.

I have a question: When El Cazador comes out, can people who don't download episodes still participate, or will we have to wait a year or so for it to come to the US?

Well, I've finally cleared out all of my commitments that have been in my way, and tonight I'm finally going to start on my crazy idea.  8)

I've warmed up a little over the week with a few random episodes or parts of episodes of Avenger, .hacks //SIGN, //Roots, and //whatever-the-OVA-was, Wild Arms, Popolocrois Story, and that Murder Princess raw.  I've had my mp3 player set to "Kajiura" all weekend.  I think I'm ready.

I've decided to stick with tradition and watch MADLAX first.  That, and I have all the pasta fixin's I need, and I still need time to dream up and go shop for some Noir-appropriate dinner ideas.  Though I'll probably go with my usual sushi take-out like how I started with it all those years ago.

I hope to get through 3 discs tonight, depeding on how tired, or inspired, I become.  I'm thinking of trying an experiment and posting observations as I finish each disc.  But considering my selection of libations for the night, we'll see how that goes.  ;D

Is it due to lack of bittorrent, or out of principle?  If the former, I think the "members only" feature in the gallery could be some help there. ;)

The spoilery stuff will be hard to avoid, so it'll be up to you, but I don't see why there'd be any other reason why you couldn't participate.

Probably out of principle, and mostly because the files are so big, and the anime (probably) so famous I'm paranoid I'll get caught by the MPAA or something.

It doesn't help I've used Bittorrent, like, once.

All done.  Took the week to do it after work.  In the subtitled it is Remy Breffort, is this a nickname for Gray-Paul?

What is unusal about Breffort and Borne in the dub?

I've decided I'm definitely going for it!  No sense stopping now.  ;D

Remy Breffort is ADV's official translation of his name; Grupaul may have been a mis-transliteration or something that otherwise stuck in the fansubs (was it in the artbooks or the official JP site?  I never looked that closely to the scans I have stashed away somewhere...)

UPDATE: 3:25 AM EDT, I've managed to finish the whole thing.  I've got a few notes, and a few thoughts, but it'll have to wait until later.  It's too much at once, and it's too late (or too early, depending on your POV).

More than honourary imo :)

El Cazador has been bumped up to December 15th at the last check...

Is it just me or does the RightStuf description (http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/QqooYFe6=MDyOexDaz/browse/item/84604/4/0/0) seem unnessecarily...drippy? It made me laugh but I'm not sure it was supposed to...

Where ancient spirits and modern science meet...pffffhahahaha....

or quadrilogy, but tetralogy is older and more correct imo. And sounds cooler to boot.

That being said, it might also be preferable to number Phantom as 1st in the trilogy, being as it is (was) an "inspiration" for Noir, and also, like the ancient tetralogies, to end with the comedy ;)

"Wednesday is Prince Spaghetti Day" *
Noir Year's Eve

...and maybe a little Phantom Phriday if I don't burn out...

I kind of doubt I'll be able to do every episode, so I'll probably skip around a bit -- hard for me to do with MADLAX & Noir, but Cazzy & Phantom have a number of episodes I'd just as soon forget.

Hopefully my brain can take the overload!

* I fear only Boca will get the reference...  ;)

I like the idea of "Phantom Phriday." Sounds like it's gonna be a great week! ^^

I think Fellini's talking about another reference....

I hope you have a great watch Fellini, I had a Le Petite Rewatch with DVD 2 of both Noir and Madlax but in alternating order (ep 5 Madlax, ep 6 Noir, ep 6 Madlax, ep 7 Noir and so on). It didn't feel strange to alternate between the 2 ep Eric Gillian and Silvana eps.

Spoiler:  3AM rant on my watching • show
Certainly noticed a few things that way and found it easier to ignore earlier preconceptions (Noir feels like a 1990s anime and Madlax a 21st century one, Noir has some of its best already and packs heavy emotional punches from start to finish, Madlax saves its best for the later episodes (not saying these aren't high quality but a lot of the best is later for Madlax imo) and especially the heart wrenching stuff.  Noir at this stage of the series is a lot more what I'm feeling now as Mireille/Kirika's relationship start to change and their relationship with themselves and  their memories. Madlax is more how people approach their lives at this point and weaving those plot pieces togerher. Madlax is a little shrewder and more cold blooded than I remember her but she still has a certain naive and genuine childish charm about her while Margaret is not clueless she just notices some special things and doesn't get the normal stuff.). Eric Gillian's words about normality are certainly mysterious. That Prince Myshkin episode a real highlight. Haven't watched the episode with that intensity of emotion nearly since the first time I saw it, wonderful.

I've been rewatching Madlax (mostly the Elenore episodes)
Spoiler: Elenore's foreshadowing • show
In ep. 14 Elenore basically speaks the most ironic sentence.

Well, I only skipped of couple of El Cazador's, and I started Madlax on ep 12 (should have called it "Wednesday is 'I am the prince' spaghetti day", now that I've seen it again :) )

I was going to try to skip some of Noir, but I couldn't do it.  I had to watch every second.  Just like Noirlax says: "Noir has some of its best already and packs heavy emotional punches from start to finish, Madlax saves its best for the later episodes"

That's probably it for another year.  Unless the mood strikes me someday beforehand...

I hope one day you'll do episode by episode commentary for Noir like you did with Madlax a couple years ago. :) But multiple blog posts for your Rewatch is good too.

I started my Rewatch last night with .hack//SIGN and needless to say I woke up tired this morning from staying up later than I should've. Watching this show always gives me the warm fuzzies in a way Noir and Madlax don't. It reminds me of the feeling I get when watching a long lost cartoon from my childhood (only this time when I'm done I won't say "Wow that sucked." :P) I get excited just hearing and seeing the Bandai Visual and Emotion logos & fanfares and I feel compelled to watch all the trailers for the crappy shows I'll never want to see, just out of a ritualistic habit. It wouldn't be right if I skipped them you understand. It's no doubt because SIGN is my first BT series and first anime I owned.

I'm several episodes in and for a show where people just stand around and talk all the time a lot of interesting and exciting things sure do happen.  :P
