So this guy reviewed .Hack SIGN in the wake of isekai anime gaining popularity. Alex, this is more of your area, do you think he gave a well thought-out review?

never cared too much for BennettTheSage but this is probably one of the more mainstream shows he's talked about.  He's usually stuck to much older and obscure stuff and a lot of OVAs.  I should watch it but chances are he panned it anyway.   Based on a comment I read, yeah doesn't sound like I'm wrong.  It's a bit wrong to hive mind but considering he's cut from the same cloth as MarzGurl and JesuOtaku yeah it really isn't surprising.

I really hate the delivery. He's kinda obnoxious and smug with irritating jokes cut-in trying to be funny. But I admit I kind of like my reviews more like documentaries; information rich, without much entertainment.

Sure he's right that its a character study and also he complains about the low budget shortcuts comparing it to GITS where he felt that was implemented better. His details on SIGN are ok, he thinks they dramatise the show about nothing and there's not a lot of development but I think that's wrong, I reckon he's insensitive to the personal emotions and outlook of life on the characters. Basically he panned it saying it's only for the historical value.

Not a good idea to compare it to GITS, GITS is a super popular franchise which is why they come out with new iterations every year.  SAC which came out about the same time also had American support after riding high from the early success of the first two movies which are critical darlings.  SIGN and Liminality were firsts for a brand new franchise on a still relatively new PS2.

I think he was comparing how it was handled where they both have the same writer or something but basically he's the same old too much talking heads, slow pace, strange shot selection complaints. Also he doesn't like how characters negate the drama by saying they are in the game, but I think that's what makes SIGN interesting.

The point is they are in a game.  They're players of an MMO.  That was the problem with SAO it seemed to completely forget the MMO Angle by episode 4 and felt like a generic fantasy world.

I think SIGN and Roots as well is a lot more grounded in reality because it is about exploring the people behind the characters whether they are online or offline. SAO well you might get glimpses of reality. Feels like validation to gamers their MMO world is the 'real world' there isn't this interaction between the game and the real world and it's just a totally different emphasis and maturity level. Anyway I didn't rate his review.
